Just watched it and, I don't know why or what it was, but something didn't click... I wanna like this, and I really hope I'm wrong, but I think there's something missing here...

Call me crazy, but I don't see the appeal. It's like a 2-hour fetish porno (minus the porn, or really even any hot chicks) with lots of anger and death thrown in. And yes, I have seen [most of] the original. Man was that mind-numbing. When this new one was announced, I looked up the trailer for the original movie to show my wife, and she literally walked away halfway through the trailer. I have no idea how that movie has lead to 3 sequels.

yeah I know what you mean. The OG Mad Max (or Road Warrior for the yanks) was filmed on a pretty tight budget. The equivalent of $400,000AUD in todays money.

Like most of these remakes, it looks like they're trying to be too dark, gritty and serious to pull it off. It's like Hollywood forgot that we still know it's a movie and wants every film to be a "wow, that changed my life!" experience.

Which would be fine, if they had great writers, scripts, and actors to work with... but remake scripts are almost always vapid by nature and the great actors require too much money for a film like this.

Exactly, but the lack of CG or complex special effects made it look much more believable than the "polished grit" from the trailer. Back in those movies, a shot in the desert, for example, actually looked like a desert, not some CG with orange filters, overdone sandstorms and whatever... back then things looked real, now they don't :/

I think this sums it up nicely. The excessive grit actually makes the film less believable, as real life doesn't look like or act that at all. There's no filters, no slow motion, no fast paced action shots with coreographed accidents...

haha I dunno about the special effects in the original movie. Toecutters death is pretty bad. The chase scene is awesome though, that's pretty much like bombing around country roads now days.

Christopher Nolan, Michael Bay and Zack Snyder really did a number on Hollywood. While I really like Christopher Nolan, I recognize that him (along with those other two directors) basically made Hollywood give up on the idea of an action movie that was lighthearted.

Looking back at movies like Die Hard, it makes me wonder if that would fly in the theaters as-is today.

Yep, action movies have become SUPERMEGA SERIOUS. Given the dull, dreary, gray, sadbro batman pictures that have been coming out, I doubt that will change.

Don't know about Mad Max, but I heard someone was making a live action documentary about daily life in Brazil? That does have a guy named Max in it, sure of it.

The movie is WAY too clean, and the actors a bit too pretty... Why the fuck are wasteland females wearing eye make-up? Just my opinion. I will still watch it and probably still enjoy it. I just don't want another Die Hard 4, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, etc.
